Every register operates in shifts. A shift tracks all sales, returns, and cash movements from open to close.

3.1 Opening a Shift

  1. Go to the register detail page
  2. Click Open Shift
  3. Enter the Opening Cash amount (count the cash in the drawer)
  4. Click Start Shift

You must open a shift before you can process sales on a register.

3.2 During a Shift

While a shift is open, you can:

  • Process sales on the register
  • Record Cash Movements (cash in/out) for petty cash, float top-ups, or other reasons
  • View running totals

3.3 Recording Cash Movements

  1. On the register or shift page, click Cash In or Cash Out
  2. Enter the amount
  3. Provide a reason (e.g. "Petty cash withdrawal", "Float top-up")
  4. Add optional notes
  5. Click Record

Cash movements are tracked in the shift audit trail and affect the expected cash calculation.

3.4 Closing a Shift

  1. Go to the open shift
  2. Click Close Shift
  3. Count the cash in the drawer and enter the Closing Cash
  4. The system calculates Expected Cash based on:
    • Opening cash + Cash sales − Cash refunds + Cash in − Cash out
  5. Any difference is reported as Cash Variance (over or short)
  6. Add closing notes if needed
  7. Click Close Shift

3.5 X-Report (Shift Reconciliation)

  1. Go to a shift (open or closed)
  2. Click X-Report
  3. View a detailed breakdown:
    • Sales by payment method
    • Returns and refunds
    • Cash movements
    • Expected vs. actual cash
    • Variance analysis
