Piece Rates and Payroll

Piece rates pay workers for good units on a step. Approved counts become Payroll earnings, so Payroll pays them through its normal process.

In this guide

14.1 Setting Up a Piece-Rate Step

  1. In the recipe, add a Labour step
  2. Set Pay type to By the piece
  3. Enter the Step rate — the rate per good piece
  4. Save the new version

The rate is kept with the recipe version, so an order always uses the rate it was planned with. Workers must be active employees in Payroll.

14.2 Recording Who Made the Units

When you record output, Who made these units? appears for each piece-rate step:

  1. Choose a Worker and enter their Good units
  2. Click + Add worker for each person
  3. Make sure the counts for each step add up to the good units recorded

Rejected pieces are not paid. The piece labour cost is good pieces × the recorded rate and posts as Piece labour applied · PRD-…. Timers and hours on piece steps stay at zero hourly cost, so wages are never applied twice.

14.3 Approving Counts for a Pay Run

Where to find it: Sidebar > Insight > Reports > Piece counts for Payroll

Who can do it: Approve production piece counts for Payroll

  1. Filter by Status (Waiting for approval or Sent to Payroll), From and To
  2. Tick the counts to approve. Columns are Worked on, Batch / step, Worker, Good units and, with cost permission, Rate and Earnings
  3. Choose the Pay period: an open regular or supplementary Payroll run
  4. Click Approve and send to Payroll and confirm

The approver must be independent. Anyone who recorded the output or work on the order, or the worker being paid, cannot approve those counts; they see "An independent supervisor must approve these piece counts."

Each count is imported once as a taxable earning on the worker's pay run inputs, labelled with the step and number of pieces. The pay run must cover the work date and include the employee. The run shows these lines under Manufacturing earnings, marked From Manufacturing and read only, with each label, quantity, rate and amount before calculation. A Piece rates link appears when you may open the source page. Imported pay stays readable if Manufacturing is later disabled. Payroll calculates tax and pays them; it does not post production labour a second time.

Correct a wrong production record before approval. Imported counts are kept for audit.

14.4 If Payroll Is Not Enabled

Counts stay pending with their original rates: "Payroll is off. Counts and their original rates are kept here until Payroll is enabled." Enable Payroll before approving them. Recording piece counts needs Payroll employee records to exist.
